Visby residents urged to boil drinking water

Residents in Visby and surrounding areas are urged to boil their drinking water starting December 3 until further notice. The reason is high levels of organisms detected in a sampling on November 28. Region Gotland emphasizes that there are no viruses or bacteria in the water.

Region Gotland has issued a recommendation to boil drinking water for residents in Brissund, Själsö, Visby, Vibble, Väskinde, and Västerhejde who use municipal water. The recommendation takes effect on December 3, 2025, and remains in place until further notice as a precautionary measure.

High levels of organisms were detected in a sampling on November 28. This includes copepods, small crustaceans that normally occur in drinking water at lower levels and are harmless. An extended sampling confirmed an increase in the Visby area, including traces of organisms that have not yet been fully identified. However, the samples showed no presence of viruses or bacteria.

"We take this very seriously and are investigating the reason for the increased levels. There are always organisms in our drinking water, but such a deviation requires action," says Susanne Bjergegård Pettersson, department head at the Water and Sewage Department at Region Gotland.

The region is now working to locate the source of the elevation and awaiting analyses of the unidentified organisms. More information is available on Region Gotland's website. Earlier reports of a VMA (important message to the public) were incorrect.
