Waste management factory worth $200 million to be built in Central Java

Malaysia's PT Green Java Solution and Indonesia's PT Maju Selaras Sejahtera have signed a partnership to build a waste processing factory for plastic and electronic waste in the Batang Industropolis Special Economic Zone, Central Java. The $200 million investment is set to begin construction by late 2025. The project is expected to employ 3,500 workers and support environmental management.

On Friday night (November 7, 2025), at the Padma Hotel in Semarang, PT Green Java Solution (Malaysia) and PT Maju Selaras Sejahtera (Indonesia) signed a partnership for building a waste processing factory. The event was witnessed by Central Java Provincial Secretary Sumarno. The factory will be constructed on 80 hectares of land in the Batang Industropolis Special Economic Zone (KEK), with a $200 million investment.

Sumarno welcomed the initiative, calling it a trigger for other investors, especially from Malaysia, supported by direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Semarang. "With the presence of the waste management industry, it is hoped to keep the environment better protected. We also hope it can absorb a lot of workforce," he said.

Director of PT Green Java Solution, Nicholas, stated construction would start in December 2025, targeting operations in June 2026. The factory is estimated to employ 3,500 workers and process up to 100 million tons of waste per year, though capacity is still under discussion with Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi. "We hope for support from the Governor of Central Java," Nicholas said.

Chief Commissioner of PT Maju Selaras Sejahtera, Kukrit Suryo Wicaksono, explained the partnership follows Governor Ahmad Luthfi's instructions after the direct Kuala Lumpur-Semarang flight and plans for a Semarang-Singapore route. "Our task is to maximize advancing investment, trade, and tourism in Central Java," he said. The project is expected to support economic growth, create jobs, and attract other investors.

The partnership covers long-term investment, planning, financing, construction, and operations, aiming to position the zone as a regional hub for environmental technology, carbon reduction, and circular economy, aligned with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles. It also contributes to Indonesia's national waste management, decarbonization, and circular economy goals.
