Spain, the tournament favorite, was held to a 0-0 draw by Cape Verde in its opening match on Monday. Belgium and Egypt finished level at 1-1.
Cape Verde achieved a notable result in its first World Cup appearance. Goalkeeper Vozinha, aged 40, was named man of the match after keeping Spain at bay throughout.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said after the match: « Dans notre plan, il nous reste sept matches. » He noted his team lacked precision in the final passes.
In the other match, Egypt took the lead through Emam Ashour in the 20th minute. Belgium equalized via an own goal by Hany in the 66th minute following the introduction of Romelu Lukaku.
