Wyndham Clark holds the lead at the U.S. Open after two rounds at Shinnecock Hills. The 2023 champion is also working to improve his public image following past incidents.
Clark shot a 64 in the first round and a 69 in the second to reach seven under par. He sits atop the leaderboard heading into the weekend at the Southampton, New York course.
The golfer discussed his recent form and a locker-damaging incident from the prior year at Oakmont. He completed required anger management sessions and charity work after that event, which led to a suspension from the club.
Clark credited his mental coach and new swing instructor for recent improvements. He won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson earlier this season after missing the cut at the PGA Championship.
"I’ve gotten a lot of grief since last year, rightfully so," Clark said. He added that he hopes strong play will help regain support from fans.
