Week 7 of the Wyoming high school skiing season brings both alpine and nordic disciplines into action simultaneously for the first time. Alpine skiers head to Red Lodge, Montana, for the Cody Invitational, while nordic events shift to Jackson due to snow conditions. Competitions span Friday and Saturday with over 130 participants from six schools.
The Wyoming high school skiing season reaches a milestone in Week 7, as alpine and nordic skiers compete on the same weekend. This marks the first such overlap, highlighting the full stride of winter sports amid recent weather hurdles.
Alpine events center on the Cody Invitational at Red Lodge Mountain in Montana, just across the northern border. Described as a challenging venue, the meet features slalom skiing on both days, starting at 10 a.m. on the Turnpike ski run. Participating schools include Casper Kelly Walsh, Casper Natrona County, Cody, Jackson, Laramie, and Pinedale, with more than 130 skiers racing at various levels. This is only the second alpine race of the year. Last week's Laramie Invitational saw Cody's girls and Jackson's boys claim team victories, with individual wins from skiers in Cody, Jackson, and Natrona County.
Nordic skiing resumes after a two-week break, relocated from Cody to Jackson's Trail Creek Nordic Invitational due to poor snow conditions. Friday's schedule includes a 5km skate or freestyle race at 1 p.m., consisting of a two-lap course with interval starts every 15 seconds. Saturday shifts to a 10km classic race at 10 a.m., using a mass start over four laps on the same course.
All teams are set to compete Friday and Saturday, with results to be posted once events conclude. This weekend's meets showcase local talent as the season progresses toward state championships.
