The Yena family in Sidwadweni village has accused a local crèche of negligence following the death of their one-year-and-three-month-old daughter in a pit toilet on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred in Tsolo in the Eastern Cape. A three-year-old spotted the toddler walking towards the pit latrine. Police have opened an inquest docket into the death.
Yolisa Yena, the child's mother, stated that staff failed to contact her promptly. She said, “This is very painful. They were very negligent. Even after we left the clinic, the teachers did not even come to us here at home.”
Principal Kolunga Bingwa expressed condolences and shock on behalf of the staff. Bingwa noted that the child was still breathing when found but later stopped. The family and teachers remain distraught.
