Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced on Wednesday that Kenya will establish the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit drawing on lessons from the New York Police Department.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed the plans after Kenyan officials toured New York and received briefings on NYPD methods.
The delegation examined the Real-Time Crime Center, which combines data from cameras, emergency calls and criminal databases. They also reviewed surveillance cameras, automated license plate recognition, gunshot detection sensors and social media monitoring.
Murkomen stated the government aims to build a modern system suited to Nairobi's role as East Africa's commercial hub. Officials said the new unit will focus on intelligence-led policing to address urban security threats.
