California gubernatorial primary remains too close to call

Vote counting continued Wednesday in California's gubernatorial primary, leaving the top two candidates undecided more than 24 hours after polls closed. Republican Steve Hilton held a narrow lead over Democrat Xavier Becerra, with Democrat Tom Steyer in third place.

With 55 percent of votes reported, Hilton led with 27.6 percent support while Becerra had 25.5 percent. Steyer trailed at 19.7 percent. Millions of ballots remained uncounted due to the state's vote-by-mail system. California's top-two primary allows the two highest vote-getters to advance to the November 3 runoff regardless of party. The final results could take up to three weeks to certify.
