Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya held a national council in Banyoles on Saturday to launch preparations for municipal elections in May 2027 and general elections due by 2027 at latest.
Secretary general Elisenda Alamany led the meeting before about 250 party members and municipal candidates. She stressed the need to win the battle of identity with progressive values against the rise of the extreme right. Alamany argued that Catalan identity rests on community, language and culture. She criticised both right-wing independentism and the PSC for their stances on Catalan identity. The council approved the rules for drawing up lists for Congress and the Senate. Gabriel Rufián’s request to choose his own colleagues directly was rejected, as territorial federations retain that power.
