Lamu residents and activists have called on the government to implement a High Court order suspending a night travel ban that has lasted nine years.
The High Court in Garsen suspended enforcement of the ban last Thursday. The order followed a petition by 24 residents and activists including Bubakar Mohamed Twalib and Hussein Khalid.
On Tuesday buses and lorries blocked the Minjila junction in protest against the 12pm to 1am restrictions. Hundreds of passengers were stranded as drivers noted that no new government notice had reinstated the ban after its 90-day term ended in October 2017.
Mohamed Skanda said defying the court order amounts to contempt of the law. Residents said the long restrictions have hurt the local economy especially fishing and tourism as well as emergency health services.
