Kakamega to establish two Ebola quarantine centres

Kakamega County will set up two Ebola quarantine centres to boost Kenya's preparedness against the virus amid regional outbreaks.

Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula announced the plans on Friday, June 5, following a county cabinet meeting and consultations with the Ministry of Health. The centres will be located in the county due to its position as a transit corridor linking western Kenya to neighbouring countries via Busia, Bungoma and Eldoret. Savula stated that the county fully supports national measures including isolation facilities, adding that public officers would be sent to help curb the disease in Kenya and the East African region. The announcement follows a recent agreement between Kenya and the United States to build a 50-bed facility at Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki, which has been suspended by the High Court pending a legal challenge.
