Magnitude 6.0 earthquake shakes central Chile with no tsunami risk

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake recorded at 17:34 on Sunday, May 31, shook central Chile with its epicenter 23 kilometers west of Quintero.

The National Seismological Center reported that the seismic movement had a depth of 30 kilometers and was felt between the regions of Atacama and Maule. The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy ruled out any tsunami risk.

The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service assessed the event as medium intensity. So far there are no reports of damage to people or infrastructure, according to Senapred and the presidential delegate of Valparaíso, Manuel Millones.

After the main quake, aftershocks of lower magnitude were recorded, including one of 4.5 at 17:46 and another of 5.0 at 17:52. The head of the Early Warning System Department at Senapred, Felipe Plaza, stated that these subsequent movements “are normal for this type of events”.
