National land commission moves to acquire land for isiolo-mandera highway

The National Land Commission has announced plans to compulsorily acquire land for a section of the 750-kilometre Isiolo-Mandera highway as part of the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project.

The commission issued a gazette notice on May 29 on behalf of the Kenya National Highway Authority. It covers deletions, corrections and additions to parcels of land along the 77-kilometre Isiolo-Kulamawe corridor in Isiolo and Meru counties. The land is required for road construction and fibre optic cable installation under the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project.

Affected landowners have been invited to public inquiry sessions scheduled between June 23 and July 6 2026. The hearings will take place at venues including Tuulu Chief’s Camp and Ndumuru Open Air Market. Participants must present identification documents, KRA PINs and ownership records.

The broader project spans over 750 kilometres and aims to improve connectivity in north eastern counties. It is funded by the World Bank and was commissioned by President William Ruto in 2025.
