AI Gandhi avatar opens at Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya

A new AI-powered 3D avatar of Mahatma Gandhi has gone live at the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya in New Delhi. The installation allows visitors to hold real-time conversations with the avatar in English or Hindi.

The life-size avatar was launched on May 21 at the museum’s Anubhuti section. It draws on Gandhi’s documented speeches and writings to answer questions.

When asked about Partition, the avatar replies that Gandhi was completely opposed to the division of India and Pakistan. On his assassination, it states that the death occurred on January 30 but declines to comment on responsibility.

Nripendra Misra, chairperson of the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society, said the goal is to preserve Gandhi’s spirit of inquiry while making history engaging. Ministry of Culture officials confirmed it is the first such AI interactive Gandhi avatar in the country.

The exhibit follows similar HoloBox installations of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and former President APJ Abdul Kalam. A fourth avatar, of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is scheduled for June 30.
