Ashish Limaye secures India's first eventing gold in 43 years

Ashish Limaye claimed India's first individual continental gold in eventing after 43 years at the 2025 FEI Asian Equestrian Championships in Pattaya, Thailand. The victory marked a personal redemption following a disappointing performance at the 2023 Asian Games. India's success extended to team silver in eventing and multiple silvers in dressage.

At the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club in Pattaya during December 2025, Ashish Limaye completed his round in the individual eventing competition, positioning him provisionally for gold. As the second-to-last rider, he awaited the final competitor's performance. "I was quite lucky to probably be second last to go and to be second in the merit," Limaye told News18 Sports. He hoped the last rider would knock a pole, and when that did not happen, it brought "sheer joy."

This win ended a 43-year drought for India in individual eventing gold at the continental level. The Indian team, including Limaye, Shashank Singh Kataria, and Shashank Kanumuri, also secured silver in the team eventing category. In dressage, Shruti Vora earned two individual silver medals and contributed to a team silver, highlighting India's progress in the discipline.

Limaye described the achievement as redemption after the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where he led after the dressage phase but experienced a 'blank moment' that cost him a medal. "The 2023 Asian Games was very emotional for me," he said. "I had a blank moment over there and, in spite of leading in dressage, it was like I threw away the medal because I was very strong in cross-country and show jumping with this horse." The setback led to two years of self-doubt, but the Pattaya podium felt like closure: "Today, this feels like a redemption."

From Pune, Limaye began riding at age seven under mentor Ghulam Mohammed Khan. After an engineering degree and successes in Bengaluru, he moved to Germany in 2021 for advanced training, facing initial challenges like finishing 37th in his first dressage competition. His horse, Willy Be Dun, acquired in early 2022, has been a consistent partner.

Limaye noted India's improving competitiveness against nations like China, Japan, and Thailand, aided by riders training abroad. However, he highlighted sponsorship and funding as ongoing challenges due to the sport's low visibility in India. Regarding Olympic qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, he emphasized that the gold does not guarantee selection, requiring further trials in 2027.
