Delhi to disconnect water supply for unpaid dues by March 31

The Delhi government plans to disconnect water connections for consumers who fail to settle their outstanding bills by March 31, 2026, following a waiver scheme on late payment surcharges. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the initiative in October, aiming to recover over Rs 5,100 crore from pending dues totaling Rs 16,000 crore. So far, nearly 21,000 customers have benefited, with collections reaching Rs 32.79 crore.

On October 14, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a waiver of late payment surcharges (LPSC) amounting to over Rs 11,000 crore for domestic water bills until January 31, 2026. From February 1 to March 31, 2026, consumers will receive a 70% waiver on these charges, requiring payment only of the principal amount. The scheme applies to both domestic and government category consumers.

A senior government official stated, “Consumers who will not pay the principal amount of their bill even after LPSC relaxation, will have to pay the full amount after March 31 next year. If they do not, their water connection will be disconnected.” Delhi has nearly 29 lakh registered water consumers, with over 15 lakh holding pending dues of Rs 16,000 crore. The government targets recovering Rs 5,100 crore post-waiver.

Since the scheme's launch, 20,980 customers have availed benefits, generating Rs 32.79 crore in revenue and Rs 96.30 crore in rebates, according to Delhi Jal Board (DJB) data. To boost participation, DJB will launch a city-wide awareness campaign featuring advertisements on DTC buses, Delhi Metro, FM radio, newspapers, and digital platforms. Partnerships with Resident Welfare Associations and community groups are also planned.

The campaign highlights how timely payments support Yamuna river cleaning, pipeline upgrades, and sewage treatment improvements. Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said, “This is not just a financial exercise – it’s a step towards accountability, sustainability, and a cleaner Yamuna. Every rupee recovered will help strengthen Delhi’s water infrastructure and improve supply to every household. I urge all citizens to take advantage of this opportunity and contribute to Delhi’s water transformation.”

Additionally, the government is considering incentives for meter readers and billing staff to enhance recovery efficiency through proactive engagement.
