Qatar TotalEnergies Open Final Preview

The Qatar TotalEnergies Open in Doha reaches its climax with a matchup between rising star Victoria Mboko and experienced Karolina Muchova. Mboko, playing only her sixth WTA 1000 main draw, advanced after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ostapenko on Friday. This marks her second WTA 1000 final, following her 2025 triumph at the Canadian Open in Montreal, where she won the WTA 1000 title at age 18 and was named Newcomer of the Year.

Mboko has 13 match wins in 2026, the most on the WTA Tour. Her path included a third-set tiebreak victory over Mirra Andreeva, saving a match point, and a three-set defeat of No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina, ending the Australian Open champion's nine-match streak. Against Ostapenko, the tournament's most successful player with 24 wins, Mboko was measured with 15 winners and 15 unforced errors, pressuring the Latvian from the baseline.

"It's kind of crazy," Mboko said of her top 10 entry. "I think this came relatively fast, but it's a nice feeling."

Muchova, seeded No. 14 and ranked No. 19, reached her seventh career final and fourth at WTA 1000 level with an 11th win of the season. She improved to 5-1 against Sakkari, rallying from 6-3, 2-0 down by winning five straight games in the second set for a 6-4 victory, then dominating 6-1 in the third. Prior to the semifinal, Muchova had not dropped a set, conceding just 19 games in four matches.

"I tried to play a little more aggressive," Muchova explained. "I wanted to go more for the returns, go for more lines."

On Mboko, she added: "She's playing incredible... it's for sure going to be a very tough battle."

Muchova, a former top 10 player with one WTA title from Seoul in 2019, is 1-5 in finals. Reaching the final projects her to No. 13, with a win taking her to No. 11. Analysts note Mboko's poise, speed, and versatility, while Muchova's variety and cool demeanor could challenge the teenager. The final starts at 6:00 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET).
