Katie Moss and Cody MacFadyen are set to transform a former restaurant space into Moss Culinary Studio, a new cafe emphasizing farm-fresh baked goods. The couple, who shifted from corporate jobs after a life-altering car accident, aims to open at 992 Willamette Street in spring 2026. Their venture builds on success at local farmers markets with savory pastries.
Katie Moss and Cody MacFadyen, who met while working in Seattle's corporate sector, decided to pursue their passion for food following a serious car accident. Moss, who had long harbored an interest in cooking and baking but prioritized her career, found the demanding lifestyle unsustainable after the incident. "I just realized that I didn't want to be waking up and working 16 hours a day for this," Moss said. "So I quit, and found the farm, and really got turned on to the things that I care about."
The accident required time in hospitals and nursing homes, where the couple relearned to walk. Once recovered, Moss volunteered at a local farm's booth at the farmers market, igniting her entrepreneurial spark. In January 2025, they launched Moss Culinary Studio from a commissary kitchen, focusing on savory baked items like focaccias topped with local vegetables, cheddar and pickle biscuits, and creamy cauliflower galettes. These products gained traction at the Lane County Farmers' Market. "Every business, when it starts off, goes through its growing pains," MacFadyen said. "But it really started taking off when Katie started doing what she was interested in."
Seeking greater sustainability, the pair considered a permanent location during summer 2025. They selected the space at 992 Willamette Street, previously occupied by Poppi's Anatolia, which relocated to the 5th Street Market. The cafe is slated to open in May 2026, continuing their market offerings while adding breakfast and lunch options such as coffee, tea, sandwiches, and quiches. Future plans include pop-up dinners and happy hours featuring beer, wine, and cocktails, though these may not launch immediately. More details are available at mossculinarystudio.com.
