Netflix releases queer psychological drama Accused

Netflix India has premiered its new original film Accused, a Hindi psychological drama centering on a queer doctor's sexual misconduct scandal. Starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta, the movie explores themes of suspicion, marriage, and truth in a London setting. Produced by Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment, it marks a significant addition to Netflix's limited LGBTQ+ stories from India.

Accused represents a notable advancement in Netflix India's representation of LGBTQ+ narratives, following earlier works like the 2022 film Cobalt Blue and the 2021 short "Geeli Pucchi" from the anthology Ajeeb Daastaans. Subtle LGBTQ+ elements have appeared in series such as Class, The Royals, and Dabba Cartel, but Accused stands out for its focused storyline.

The plot, as described by Netflix, follows a celebrated queer doctor in London accused of sexual misconduct. Her life unravels amid suspicion and scrutiny, fracturing her marriage. Her wife faces the choice to leave or defend her amid blurring truths.

Konkona Sen Sharma portrays Dr. Geetika Sen, the gynecologist at the scandal's center. Sharma, known for Netflix roles in Killer Soup, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, and Ajeeb Daastaans, also directed "The Mirror" in Lust Stories 2. Pratibha Ranta plays Meera, Geetika's wife and fellow doctor, following her breakout in the 2023 comedy Laapataa Ladies—India's entry for the 97th Academy Awards—and the series Heeramandi.

Supporting cast includes Mashhoor Amrohi from War, Aditya Nanda from Jigra, Sukant Goel from Monica, O My Darling, Monica Mahendru from Ray, and Kallirroi Tziafeta from Little Things.

Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, known for Doctor G, the film features a screenplay by Sima Agarwal and Yash Keswani, writers of Anek and Khaali Peeli. It runs for 1 hour and 47 minutes with a TV-MA rating for language. Subtitles are available in languages including English, Hindi, French, German, and Spanish, with dubs in English, Hindi, Italian, and others.

This production continues Dharmatic Entertainment's collaboration with Netflix, which includes films like Guilty and Ajeeb Daastaans, and series such as Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives and The Fame Game. Accused is now streaming globally on Netflix.
