Nevada man sentenced to prison for fatal stabbing

A Las Vegas man received a prison sentence of 14 to 35 years on Tuesday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. Jose Galan-Preval, 47, admitted to killing his girlfriend Yaimara Leyva-Cadet in January.

Galan-Preval stabbed Leyva-Cadet multiple times at their downtown Las Vegas home on January 23 after she refused to cook rice for him. Police responded around 12:56 p.m. and found her with stab wounds. She was taken to a hospital but later died.

His public defender, Jin Kim-Steadman, told the court that tensions had built because Leyva-Cadet was unemployed and accused him of infidelity. Galan-Preval had been drinking and snapped during the argument, according to testimony from roommates.

District Judge Jaqueline Bluth imposed the sentence, noting his immediate remorse and lack of prior criminal history. Galan-Preval turned himself in and told authorities he had lost control of his emotions. He also asked for forgiveness during the hearing.
