Penn State Nittany Lions track and field competitors broke three school records during a recent weekend of invitationals. Jake Palermo improved his 400-meter mark, while Allon Clay and Nick Sloff each shattered their previous bests in middle-distance events. The performances highlight a strong start for the team in the season.
The Penn State Nittany Lions track and field program enjoyed a record-setting weekend at two major invitationals. On Friday, graduate student Allon Clay broke the school's 1,000-meter record at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, clocking 2:17.29 to win the race. This time surpassed his previous mark of 2:18.09, set earlier this year at the Nittany Lion Challenge. Clay's performance ranks second in NCAA history, behind Tinoda Matsatsa of Georgetown, who ran 2:16.84 last year. The athlete hails from Fujisawa, Kanagawa, Japan.
Later that day, Nick Sloff, a native of State College, Pennsylvania, also competed at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational and broke his own school record in the men's 3,000-meter with a time of 7:42.68, finishing ninth. This improved upon his prior best of 7:48.55 from the Penn Elite meet in January.
At the Tyson Invite, Jake Palermo set a new Penn State standard in the 400 meters, running 45.33. This broke his previous record of 45.65, established in his second collegiate race last year. Within just four hours on Friday, the Nittany Lions had claimed three school records, underscoring their competitive edge in the Big Ten Conference.
