Revamping Pilanesberg Airport expected to create jobs

Infrastructure South Africa expects the revamping of Pilanesberg International Airport to create jobs and boost economic growth in North West province. The initiative follows a fire in 2023 that damaged the facility. Minister Dean Macpherson and Premier Lazarus Mokgosi signed two memoranda of understanding to fast-track redevelopment.

On February 20, 2026, Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson and North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi signed two landmark Memoranda of Understanding at Pilanesberg International Airport outside Rustenburg. These agreements focus on redeveloping the airport after it suffered extensive fire damage in 2023, which highlighted infrastructure vulnerabilities in the region.

The first MOU involves Infrastructure South Africa partnering with the Provincial Government’s Department of Community Safety and Transport Management. This collaboration will provide technical support for preparing and packaging the airport rebuild project, aiming to attract investment and speed up implementation. Head of Infrastructure South Africa, Mameetse Masemola, emphasized the importance of this work.

“In terms of Pilanesberg International Airport itself, the context of our entry point is the fact that we got to be working with the province to develop pair and package the project properly, ensuring that we identify the funding path ways for this and to make sure that it really serves as a catalyst for tourism growth, for regional sand economic activities in the province,” Masemola said.

The second agreement seeks to enhance overall infrastructure planning and delivery in the province. Officials anticipate that the revamped airport will create jobs and stimulate economic activity, particularly in tourism and regional development.
