Sioux Falls police put up signs warning of crypto ATM scams

The Sioux Falls Police Department is combating rising cryptocurrency scams by placing warning signs next to crypto ATMs in the city. These signs aim to caution users about potential fraud and encourage them to verify recipients before sending money. Sergeant Jake Harris highlighted the prevalence of such scams both locally and nationally.

Cryptocurrency scams have been increasing nationwide, prompting the Sioux Falls Police Department’s Fraud Division to take proactive measures. In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the department has begun placing signs adjacent to crypto ATMs to inform the public and prevent victimization.

Sergeant Jake Harris, with the SFPD Property Crime and Fraud Division, noted the growing issue: “Year after year, it’s become quite known that crypto scams are becoming more prevalent. That’s both nationally and locally, unfortunately.”

The signs advise caution when using crypto ATMs for sending money, emphasizing the need to know exactly who the recipient is. They also urge individuals to contact law enforcement if fraud is suspected. Harris explained the rationale behind the initiative: “It’s not uncommon to see some of these victims put tens of thousands of dollars into these crypto ATMs. Which then, it’s very hard for us to recover those funds once they go into those ATMs. Which is why we’re trying to put up these signs as a last-ditch effort to hopefully cause that or have that person maybe pause and reflect on what they’re doing if somebody’s telling them to put this money into the ATM.”

This effort serves as a final safeguard to make potential victims reconsider hasty transactions. For those who believe they or someone they know has been targeted, the SFPD non-emergency line is available at 605-367-7000.
