South Korea intends to update its 76-year-old National Property Act to treat virtual currencies and intellectual property as national assets. The Ministry of Economy and Finance outlined the changes in a new economic policy roadmap.
The ministry released the roadmap on Wednesday. It calls for revisions that would bring digital assets into the state asset management system for the first time.
Officials also confirmed plans to pilot tokenized government bonds in 2027. The pilot will explore links to the Bank of Korea’s central bank digital currency network.
Additional measures under study include tokenizing state-owned real estate for retail investors. Amendments to the Capital Markets Act and the Electronic Act are set to take effect on Feb. 4, 2027, granting blockchain ledgers formal status as security registries.
