The Contraloría General de la República concluded that former Security Minister Trinidad Steinert exceeded her functions by requesting reserved information from the PDI on personnel linked to a criminal investigation.
The recently issued ruling states that Steinert acted two days after taking office by requesting data on an Antinarcotics and Organized Crime Brigade through a reserved official letter. The Contraloría indicated that this request could compromise an ongoing criminal investigation, violating legal restrictions despite the powers under Article 3 of Law 21.730.
The oversight body also highlighted a duty of abstention due to a conflict of interest stemming from Steinert’s prior role as regional prosecutor in Tarapacá. The pronouncement responds to a request from two parliamentarians after the controversy generated by the dismissal of the PDI’s general prefect.
Separately, Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna confirmed that a possible position for Steinert as an attaché at the Chilean embassy in Peru is under study, although he clarified there is no concrete decision and the matter has not been discussed with President José Antonio Kast.
