Szabolcs Csépe, a Hungarian gamer known as GrassHopper, has shattered a decade-old world record for the longest Dance Dance Revolution marathon, dancing for 144 hours over six days. The achievement, completed between October 23 and 29, 2024, surpassed the previous mark set in 2015. Csépe documented over 3,000 songs and burned more than 22,000 calories during the grueling event.
Record-Breaking Feat
Dance Dance Revolution, which debuted over 20 years ago, continues to inspire dedicated players. Szabolcs Csépe took his passion to extreme heights by completing a 144-hour marathon from October 23 to 29, 2024, as verified by Guinness World Records. This effort beat the prior record of 138 hours and 34 seconds, held by American gamer Carrie Swidecki on Just Dance since 2015.
Challenges and Preparation
Csépe described the attempt as 'the most physically demanding experience,' highlighting the lack of stretching during hours of continuous movement. He relied on a small team for hydration and nutrition to endure. Additionally, managing documentation and witness activities added to the difficulty. 'What also added to the challenge was managing and documenting all witness activities and their time allocation by myself; essentially before, during and after the record attempt,' Csépe said.
Motivation came from the game's rhythm and music. 'Motivation is always a given with rhythm and music games! Those who love this genre can always tell that there is nothing more encouraging than dancing or doing body workout while listening to your favorite tunes,' he added.
Previous Achievements
This isn't Csépe's first record. He previously held the longest video game marathon for a puzzle game with 32 hours, 32 minutes, and 32 seconds on Tetris Effect, and a 90-hour session for racing games on Gran Turismo 7. No plans for his next challenge have been announced yet.
The event underscores the enduring appeal of rhythm games and the physical limits gamers are willing to push.
