Illinois track teams head to NCAA indoor championships

The top-ranked Illinois women's track and field team will send 13 athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships, while the No. 14 men's squad sends five. The event takes place March 13-14 at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The University of Illinois Fighting Illini track and field programs are preparing for the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. Phethisang Makhethe ranks third nationally in weight throw at 23.70 meters, also a school record and Big Ten title performance.

Other women's qualifiers include Oluwatomilayo Akintunde in weight throw (22.18 meters, No. 11 seed), JaiCieonna Gero-Holt in pentathlon (No. 4) and high jump (No. 7), Katharina Graman in triple jump (No. 12), Mercy Honesty in triple jump (No. 6), Lucie Kienast in pentathlon (No. 7), Jordan Koskondy in weight throw (No. 4), Mia Morello in pole vault (No. 7), Elizabeth Ndudi in long jump (No. 4), and Romi Tamir in triple jump (No. 7).

For the men, freshman Luuk Pelkmans ranks third in heptathlon with 6,151 points from his Illinois debut. Jip de Greef is fifth at 6,019 points. Cody Johnston set a school-record 5.70 meters in pole vault, seeding seventh. Zavien Wolfe is seventh in triple jump at 16.46 meters, and Viktor Morozov is 11th at 16.38 meters, fresh off a Big Ten title.

The championships mark a strong showing for Illinois, building on recent Big Ten successes and program records.
