An AI-powered dating app launched by the Tokyo government has resulted in 265 marriages since its September 2024 launch. The app, called Tokyo Enmusubi, aims to address Japan's declining birth rate by connecting people interested in marriage.
The Tokyo government released data this month showing that as of June 30, the app had 16,000 registered members selected from around 36,000 applicants. Users must prove they are legally single and pass an online interview to join. There are also 760 couples in serious relationships.
One user, quoted under the pseudonym Turtle, said she joined as a last chance before turning 40. She met her husband through the app at the end of August and accepted his proposal in December.
Another user, quoted as Skytree, noted that the app shows compatibility in three stages. This feature encouraged meetings even when unsure at first. The app was created after a survey found around 70 percent of those interested in marriage were not actively matchmaking.
Japan recorded a record low of 671,236 births to Japanese nationals in 2025, continuing a decade-long decline, according to government data.
