A World War II bomb at Duisburg's main railway station has been safely detonated, lifting the station's closure. The bomb, a 500 kg American device, was found during construction work. Approximately 6,600 residents and travelers were affected by the evacuation.
On Wednesday, construction work at Duisburg's Hauptbahnhof uncovered an American 500 kg bomb from World War II, as announced by the city of Duisburg. This came after a similar incident on Tuesday, when a dud bomb was detonated and the station was already closed. Rail traffic had come to a complete halt since early Wednesday evening.
The evacuation zone covered a 600-meter radius around the discovery site, affecting about 6,600 residents and many travelers. Facilities impacted included a cinema, several hotels, office buildings, and businesses. The A59 motorway was also closed between the Duisburg-Hochfeld junction and the Duisburg interchange.
Following the controlled detonation, the city reported that the main station is back in operation. The measures ensured the safety of all involved while restoring normal operations as swiftly as possible.
