On March 11, 2018, in Addis Ababa, Acting Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen held talks with Dr. Kosmas Zavazava, director of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
During the meeting, Demeke highlighted opportunities to strengthen cooperation with the director, drawing on data from social services, in areas of digital development. Zavazava praised Ethiopia's achievements in telecommunications, digital accessibility, skills, institutional capacity building, and implementation of the Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy.
Demeke stated that the discussion marks a step toward accelerating digital transformation through enhanced ties with the ITU. He advised on bolstering Ethiopia's leadership role in the sector and developing human resources for digitalization. They also addressed capacity building and potential new areas of collaboration.
The two sides agreed to collaborate on achieving the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy and advancing cooperation. The ITU pledged practical support, including hosting international conferences in Ethiopia to showcase the country globally, promoting the strategy, and providing sustained assistance.
