South Korean group Blackpink has released its first collective music in over three years with the mini-album Deadline. The EP features the hit single Jump and four new tracks, showcasing the members' confident style without any ballads. Individual solo projects by the members have preceded this group effort.
Blackpink, consisting of Jennie, Rosé, Lisa, and Jisoo, unveiled Deadline on February 28, 2026, marking their return since the 2022 album Born Pink. The 15-minute EP includes the 2025 single "Jump," a Top 40 hit produced by Diplo that blends 2000s pop nostalgia, EDM elements, and references to the Spice Girls. It also introduces four new songs, emphasizing the group's energetic and charismatic approach.
The members have been active individually in the interim. Rosé released Rosie, featuring the track "Apt." with Bruno Mars, which she performed at the Grammys. Lisa dropped Alter Ego, including "Rockstar" and "New Woman." Jennie issued Ruby, and Jisoo released Amortage, all in the previous year.
Among the new tracks, "Go" stands out as the first song co-written by all four members, produced by Cirkut and Teddy with a writing credit to Chris Martin of Coldplay. It features fast-paced drops, chants of "Black! Pink!", and a nod to Bruce Springsteen's "Darkness on the Edge of Town," as Jennie sings, "When your heart is broken, baby/Darkness on the edge of toooown."
"Me and My" adopts a trap style, with Jennie rapping about "pretty privilege" and declaring, "Daisy Dukes make me speak my mind." The EP's highlight, "Champion," shifts to 1980s new wave synth-pop influenced by The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees, creating a darkwave atmosphere that complements the group's vocals. Closing track "Fxxxboy" is an acoustic ballad where Jisoo warns, "Keep your expectations under the pavement," and asserts, "Guess karma’s a bitch/How’s it feel? Now I’m the fuckboy!"
The album's title ties to Blackpink's 2025 Deadline World Tour, which concluded in January 2026. Deadline avoids the group's past ballad tendencies, focusing instead on bold, playful themes that reflect their evolved group dynamic.
