Court of Auditors seeks allegations on fund origins before applying amnesty

The Court of Auditors has resumed proceedings on alleged misuse of funds for the 1-O referendum and granted parties ten days to clarify whether European funds were used.

The auditing body announced its decision on Monday following last week’s ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union. The CJEU upheld the amnesty law provided the acts do not involve funds from the EU budget.

The Court of Auditors had suspended the case in July 2024 after referring a preliminary question. It now requests documentation on the origin of the investigated expenditures, which cover preparation of the 2017 referendum and the Generalitat’s external action between 2011 and 2017.

Those facing charges include former presidents Carles Puigdemont and Artur Mas, as well as former ministers Raül Romeva, Jordi Turull, Toni Comín and Lluís Puig. Prosecutors seek more than three million euros.
