The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has outlined the qualification system for the 2026 FIDE Women’s Freestyle Chess World Championship. This setup links freestyle events to the women’s chess calendar, providing pathways for grandmasters, emerging players, and online experts. The tournament will feature 12 participants competing for the title in the Chess960 format.
The FIDE Women’s Freestyle Chess World Championship, scheduled for 2026, will use a qualification process that allocates eight spots through various routes, resulting in a total of 12 players.
One spot is reserved as a freestyle chess wild card for the winner of an exhibition match between Bibisara Assaubayeva and Alexandra Kosteniuk, to be held alongside the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship in February 2026. Three places will go to the top-performing women at the 2026 Grenke Freestyle Open in April 2026.
A single spot targets top players, inviting the eight participants from the Women’s Candidates tournament, plus the top four women on the FIDE Women’s Standard rating list as of May 1, 2026, excluding those already qualified. If Assaubayeva secures the wild card, her potential spot in this category will shift to the next eligible player on the May 1, 2026, rating list.
An online qualifier open to all titled players is set for June 2026, awarding one place. The remaining two spots depend on over-the-board (OTB) qualifiers in the Freestyle, Chess960, or Fischer Random Chess format. Organizers interested in hosting these must apply by March 31, 2026. Should no applications arrive, these slots could shift to online events, such as an extra spot in a top-12 online tournament or another titled player qualifier.
The FIDE Council has approved these pathways, tasking the Management Board with finalizing implementation rules. Freestyle Chess, also called Chess960 or FIDE Fischer Random Chess per the FIDE Charter, builds on prior Fischer Random events from 2019 and 2022.
