Google sets I/O 2026 for May 19 and 20

Google has announced that its annual developer conference, I/O 2026, will occur on May 19 and 20 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. The dates were revealed after users solved puzzles on the official event website. Attendees and viewers can expect updates on Android, Chrome, XR, and especially the Gemini AI model.

Google's I/O conference serves as a key platform for unveiling advancements in its software ecosystem, primarily aimed at developers but with broad implications for users. For 2026, the event is scheduled for May 19 and 20 at the company's Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. Unlike some past years where dates were concealed in elaborate puzzles, this year's information appeared on the official I/O 2026 page after participants quickly solved the challenges.

The puzzles incorporated several minigames powered by Gemini, Google's generative AI. These included a mini-golf game featuring a virtual caddy offering advice, a nonogram puzzle generating endless boards, Word Wheel using Gemini 3 for level design, Super Sonicbot with microphone controls for the Android Bot's altitude, and Stretchy Cat where Gemini 3 balances game mechanics and difficulty for endless play.

Expectations for the conference center on software updates, including Android 17, Chrome, XR technologies, and Google's app suite. A significant focus will likely be on Gemini, which has seen integrations such as hands-free navigation in Maps toward the end of last year, an AI side panel in Chrome early in 2026, and enhanced features in Gmail like suggested replies and AI Overviews.

As tradition holds, Google will stream keynotes and sessions for free, including the opening keynote where major announcements typically occur. Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared on X (formerly Twitter): "See you all at Google I/O starting May 19th!" The conference highlights Google's ongoing push to embed AI across its products.
