Government launches FMD self-vaccination portal for livestock farmers

The Minister of Agriculture launched an online portal on 25 July 2026 allowing livestock owners to apply for authorisation to vaccinate their own animals against Foot-and-Mouth Disease.

Minister Willie Aucamp introduced the self-vaccination application system as part of measures to improve South Africa’s response to Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreaks. The platform lets cattle owners and managers register for voluntary vaccinations through the FMD Reporting site while following three required steps.

The system aligns with biosecurity guidelines, legal requirements and conditions for traceability and vaccination reporting. Aucamp stated that the launch enables owners to vaccinate livestock and marks the start of greater private sector involvement.

He added that the Department of Agriculture remains committed to supporting stakeholders in addressing the FMD outbreak. The portal aims to speed up authorisations and strengthen overall disease control efforts.
