Jason Momoa has joined the cast of the upcoming Helldivers film adaptation, directed by Justin Lin for Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. The movie is scheduled for release on November 10, 2027. It follows the video game's premise of elite soldiers battling alien threats on Super Earth.
The announcement of Jason Momoa's involvement in the Helldivers movie adaptation highlights the growing trend of video game-to-film projects. According to reports, Momoa will take a lead role in the action adventure, which Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are producing. Director Justin Lin, known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise, is helming the project through his company, Perfect Storm Entertainment. Other producers include Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash.
The film draws from the 2015 video game Helldivers, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, where players control an elite unit of soldiers, called Helldivers, fighting alien creatures endangering the fictional planet Super Earth. A sequel, Helldivers 2, was released in 2024, providing additional source material. While the movie's plot details remain unconfirmed, it is expected to align with the game's shooter-style narrative.
This project continues Sony and PlayStation's collaborations on adaptations, following the 2022 film Uncharted, which grossed $407 million globally, and television series like Peacock's Twisted Metal and HBO's The Last of Us. Momoa recently starred in A Minecraft Movie alongside Jack Black, which earned over $950 million worldwide. His past roles include Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones and Aquaman in the DC film. Upcoming projects for Momoa include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as Lobo, a Street Fighter adaptation as Blanka, and Dune: Part Three as Duncan Idaho.
No additional cast members have been announced for Helldivers.
