Texas man sentenced to life for double family murder

A Tarrant County jury has convicted 37-year-old Reid Rothenberg of capital murder in the 2022 killings of Matthew Stuart and George Nitsche, sentencing him to life without parole. The attack targeted family members at a home in Arlington, Texas, leaving Stuart's mother as the sole survivor. Authorities described the incident as a brutal homicide with an unclear motive.

On the night of April 10, 2022, Reid Rothenberg, then 37, kicked in the front door of a residence on Ivy Hill Drive in Arlington, Texas. Inside, 84-year-old George Nitsche was reclining on a couch in the back of the house when Rothenberg opened fire, striking and killing him instantly.

"He never saw it coming," Tarrant County Assistant District Attorney Matt Rivers told the jury during the trial. "That's his final resting place."

Rothenberg then pursued 41-year-old Matthew Stuart and Stuart's 67-year-old mother—Nitsche's ex-wife—into the front yard, firing repeatedly. Arlington Police Department officers arrived just after midnight on April 11, 2022, discovering the three victims. Nitsche was declared dead at the scene, Stuart succumbed at a nearby hospital, and the mother survived her injuries.

The victims were all family members, according to police statements at the time. Investigators arrested Rothenberg about two months later, in June 2022, after linking him to the crime through evidence review. Detectives noted that he knew at least one of the victims, though the motive remains unclear.

Tarrant County Assistant District Attorney Tad Schmidt emphasized the severity during proceedings, stating, "This is not just a killing; this is a brutal homicide by someone who came to kill that night."

The jury's guilty verdict on capital murder charges led to an automatic life sentence without parole, as announced by the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office.
