Air India to start direct flights to Hanoi and Tokyo

Air India has announced new non-stop services to Hanoi and Tokyo as part of its Asian expansion. The airline will launch five weekly flights from Delhi to Hanoi starting May 1 and four weekly flights from Mumbai to Tokyo's Haneda Airport from June. These routes aim to meet growing travel demand from India to Vietnam and Japan.

Air India is enhancing its connectivity in Asia with the introduction of direct flights to key destinations in Vietnam and Japan. The airline will operate five weekly non-stop flights between Delhi and Hanoi using the Airbus A320neo aircraft, which features Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class cabins. This service begins on May 1 and will add over 7,000 seats per month between India and Vietnam. It complements Air India's existing daily flights from Delhi to Ho Chi Minh City, allowing passengers to use open-jaw itineraries for exploring multiple cities in Vietnam.

Vietnam has emerged as a rapidly growing travel hub in Southeast Asia, attracting over 20 million visitors in 2025 and ranking as the third-most-visited destination in the region. The country is increasingly popular among Indian leisure travelers and corporate groups for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions.

Separately, Air India plans four weekly non-stop flights from Mumbai to Tokyo's Haneda Airport starting in June, operated with the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. This route will bolster the airline's existing services from Delhi to Tokyo Haneda. Nipun Aggarwal, Air India's Chief Commercial Officer, noted that "both Japan and Vietnam are seeing strong growth in travel demand from India." He added that the expansions support this demand and strengthen business and economic ties between the countries.

Japan welcomed more than 315,000 Indian visitors in 2025, marking a 35 percent rise from 2024 and nearly 80 percent above pre-pandemic levels, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization. Air India, under the Tata Group since its privatization, has been broadening its international network, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Far East. The airline maintains a codeshare with All Nippon Airways, enabling connections to cities like Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Okinawa, Osaka, and Sapporo from Tokyo. Earlier this year, on February 14, Air India upgraded its Delhi-Tokyo Haneda route to daily flights using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
