Anthropic to charge usage fees for Claude Fable 5

Anthropic will require usage-based payments from subscribers seeking access to its leading consumer AI model. The move complicates the longstanding free-or-subscription model for AI chatbots. It signals the potential end of simple monthly AI plans.

AI model developers have long offered consumers a simple deal. Users could access the technology for free through an online chatbot or pay a monthly subscription for more usage, premium features, and advanced models.

Anthropic is about to alter that arrangement. Claude subscribers must soon pay usage-based fees to reach the company’s best consumer AI model, Claude Fable 5.

The shift marks a departure from the flat-fee approach that has defined much of the consumer AI market.
