Black voters confront Talarico over outreach at Texas event

Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico faced sharp questions from Black attendees at a Houston town hall over the weekend about his outreach to Black voters. The exchange highlighted broader frustrations among Southern Black Democrats with their party's focus.

Talarico, who won the Democratic primary against Rep. Jasmine Crockett, was told by one attendee to stay and answer questions or "suffer the consequences." Another participant said she attended "for my people, not for you," drawing applause from the crowd.

Talarico responded that he was "happy to engage" and called the woman's presence "wonderful." He added that such exchanges are "what this conversation is supposed to be about."

The incident comes amid reports of grievances from Black lawmakers in states like Tennessee, Florida, and Alabama. They say Democratic leaders have neglected deep-red states after the Supreme Court limited race-based redistricting, allowing new maps in several Southern states.

Tennessee state Rep. Justin Jones told Politico that party leaders treat states like Mississippi and Alabama as "neglected and forgotten." Florida House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell described the changes as an effort to "suppress Black voices."
