Bytedance announces Project Swan XR headset at MWC

ByteDance's Pico unveiled its upcoming Project Swan mixed reality headset at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, positioning it as a high-end work device to rival the Apple Vision Pro and Samsung Galaxy XR. The headset features advanced processors and display technology aimed at replacing traditional monitors. It emphasizes productivity beyond gaming with software for 3D digital workspaces.

ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, acquired the VR startup Pico in 2021 and has since expanded its mixed reality efforts. At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week, Pico announced Project Swan, a higher-end XR headset set for release later this year.

The device includes an onboard micro OLED display with 40 pixels per degree of resolution density, comparable to the Apple Vision Pro and Samsung Galaxy XR. It supports mixed-reality overlays through passthrough cameras, allowing graphics in real-world settings. Powering the headset are dual custom chips that ByteDance claims are twice as powerful as Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, found in Meta's Quest 3 and 3S headsets and a version in the Samsung Galaxy XR.

Project Swan aims to function as more than a gaming device, with ambitions to serve as a computer replacement. Pico's latest OS resembles VisionOS and Android XR more than Meta's Horizon OS, enabling multiple applications in 3D digital workspaces. As one source notes, it seeks to prove that XR is "not just for gaming" anymore by providing a digital office.

While pricing and specific software details remain undisclosed, existing Pico headsets support Android apps and Windows PC connectivity. This announcement highlights ByteDance's push into productivity-focused XR amid evolving competition from Apple, Samsung, and Meta.
