DOH says deworming medicine is generally safe

The Department of Health on Thursday stated that albendazole used in school deworming is generally safe with mild side effects and urged the public to avoid misinformation following a student's death.

The Department of Health said albendazole has been part of the national public health program for nearly three decades and is recommended by the World Health Organization. It noted that side effects such as stomach pain, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, or skin rashes may occur within the first few hours but are usually mild and temporary.

The statement followed the death of a Grade 4 pupil from Hugo Perez Elementary School-Annex in Trece Martires City, Cavite, on July 2 after a routine deworming activity. Initial findings from the Department of Education linked the death to an infection that caused septic shock, while several other students also fell ill.

Health workers and local government units were directed to follow safety protocols strictly. The agency called on the public to rely on verified information and continue supporting the program to protect children from intestinal worms.
