Police refer ex-prosecutor to prosecution for forging document in Lee knife attack case

Police have referred former prosecutor Kim Sang-min and two other officials to prosecution on forgery charges linked to the 2024 knife attack on President Lee Jae Myung.

Police said Thursday they referred the three officials, who worked at the National Intelligence Service during its probe last year, to the prosecution on July 3. Kim is suspected of drafting an internal report that falsely indicated a cutter knife was used instead of the actual 18-centimeter knife, leading the NIS to conclude the attack was not a terror case.

The government later designated the attack, which occurred while Lee was opposition leader, as a terror case in January. Kim, who has ties to former first lady Kim Keon Hee, faces a separate trial over gifting a painting by artist Lee Ufan.

The police task force, launched in January, will conclude its investigation. It also found the attacker, surnamed Kim, made another attempt in December 2023 for a total of six. The Supreme Court finalized the attacker's 15-year prison term in February 2025.
