Rising US measles cases spur drug development efforts

The United States is experiencing its highest number of measles cases in decades amid declining vaccination rates. Researchers have begun developing treatments for the virus and for vulnerable individuals.

Up until recently, the effectiveness of measles vaccination meant there was little medical or financial incentive to create treatments for the disease.

As cases climb, scientists are now working on drugs to assist those who become infected or face higher risks from the virus.

The shift reflects changing public health conditions in the country.

A needle-free, DNA-based vaccine candidate designed using machine-learning methods has completed a first-in-human Phase 1 study in the UK, with researchers reporting it was well tolerated and induced immune responses against multiple viruses in the sarbecovirus group, which includes SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2 and related bat coronaviruses.

Researchers at Georgia State University have developed an oral drug that stopped a measles-like virus from transmitting between ferrets via air or contact. The treatment worked when given before or after exposure and shortened illness duration.
