Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams has accused KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of disregarding the law during testimony before a parliamentary committee. Adams claims Mkhwanazi wants him to cover up access to classified information. He also supported the disbandment of a task team investigating political killings.
Fadiel Adams, a Member of Parliament and leader of the National Coloured Congress, appeared before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption, and political interference in the justice system. This followed KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's testimony on Wednesday, where he identified Adams as one of two MPs with access to classified information.
Adams stated that the classified information was slid under his office door, prompting him to open criminal cases against senior South African Police Service (SAPS) management. He accused Mkhwanazi of wanting him to suppress the matter, saying, “I do believe General Mkhwanazi is a constitutional delinquent. He rather wants me to cover it up.”
Adams expressed support for the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), describing it as a waste of resources. “The PKTT for me is a total waste, it costs us a R100 million a year,” he said, suggesting the funds could instead enhance crime-fighting in hotspots.
He further alleged issues within crime intelligence, claiming that Divisional Commissioner Lt-General Dumisani Khumalo lacks the required security clearance and that the division is involved in money laundering activities. Members of Parliament are scheduled to question Adams at a later date.
The committee's proceedings highlight ongoing concerns about integrity within law enforcement and the justice system in South Africa.
