Plans are underway to convert a disused warehouse at Centurion House, Central Way, in Andover's Walworth Business Park, into the Andover Padel Club. The application, submitted to Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) on February 27, outlines the addition of three indoor padel courts, a gym area, changing rooms, toilets, and a café. External modifications would feature new powder-coated aluminium access doors, a wheelchair lift, and an entrance ramp. Parking would expand by 30 spaces to handle expected visitors.
Padel has surged in popularity in the UK, described in the planning statement by CRD Building Consultancy as "widely renowned as the fastest growing sport in the world" and potentially an Olympic event by 2032. The statement emphasizes community benefits: "The proposed Andover Padel Club aims to contribute to the overall wellbeing of Andover residents and create a positive, lasting impact on the local community." It highlights the site's accessibility near the A303, A34, and M3 roads.
Although the area is designated for employment, the National Planning Policy Framework allows flexibility for uses that promote community wellbeing, such as this leisure project. Part of the building remains occupied by Portway Domestic Appliances, which would continue operations. The warehouse is not currently needed for storage, and the structure could revert to industrial use if required. The proposal supports year-round play, with the statement noting: "By creating an all-weather, all-year-round facility, this will ensure that padel can be played consistently throughout the seasons."
The site is not near residential areas, and no public comments have been received as of reporting. TVBC must decide by May 29; the full application is available under reference 26/00404/FULLN on the council's portal.
