Champion Breweries completes Bullet brand portfolio acquisition

Champion Breweries Plc has finalized its acquisition of the Bullet brand portfolio from Sun Mark, expanding into 14 African markets. The deal, first announced in August 2025, positions the Nigerian brewer as a diversified beverage platform. It includes trademarks, formulations, and commercial rights held in a new Netherlands entity.

Champion Breweries, the Uyo-based producer of Champion Lager and Champ Malta, announced on March 2, 2026, the completion of its acquisition of the Bullet brand portfolio from Sun Mark. The transaction, initially revealed on August 20, 2025, transfers ownership of Bullet's assets, trademarks, formulations, and global commercial rights through an asset carve-out structure.

The acquired brands will operate under a newly incorporated entity in the Netherlands, where Champion Breweries holds a majority interest. Vinar N.V., Sun Mark's majority shareholder, retains a minority stake. Bullet products, including Bullet Black—a leading ready-to-drink alcoholic beverage in Nigeria—and Bullet Blue, which has a strong presence in the energy drink category across several African countries, are already distributed in 14 African markets.

This move accelerates Champion Breweries' shift from a regional brewing business to a multi-category consumer platform with pan-African reach. Management highlighted the portfolio's established brand recognition and profitability, stating, “This expansion significantly broadens Champion Breweries’ addressable market and strengthens its revenue base with an established, profitable portfolio that already enjoys strong brand recognition and consumer loyalty across multiple markets.”

The acquisition was funded by proceeds from the company's recent N16 billion rights issue and public offer, which bolstered its balance sheet and attracted new investors. Imo-Abasi Jacob, the company's chair, noted, “The support from shareholders and new investors reflects confidence in our long-term strategy to build a diversified beverage platform with pan-African scale,” emphasizing a focus on integration and execution.

Founded over five decades ago as part of the enJOYcorp Group, Champion Breweries anticipates scaling in high-growth ready-to-drink alcoholic and energy drink segments. The deal structure minimizes upfront manufacturing costs, relying initially on existing arrangements, with potential future exploration of Nigerian production to serve as an export hub. It also enhances foreign-currency exposure to diversify revenue amid exchange-rate challenges for Nigerian manufacturers.
