Charles Leclerc has described the early competitive balance in the 2026 Formula 1 season as complicated to assess. Speaking after the first pre-season test in Bahrain, the Ferrari driver highlighted how teams can conceal their cars' true potential through power unit tweaks. He placed Red Bull and Mercedes ahead of Ferrari, though with a small gap.
During the initial pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit, Charles Leclerc addressed the challenges in gauging the field for the new F1 season. The Monegasque driver noted that advancements in hybrid and electric power units allow for numerous adjustments that obscure a car's real capabilities. "It's normal at this point of the season, also because it's so difficult to understand," Leclerc told media, including RacingNews365. "With hybrid — and especially the electric — engine being so much more powerful, there are so many small tweaks that you can do, and you can hide the real potential of the car in many, many different ways now."
Leclerc observed a pattern where rivals like Red Bull and Mercedes pointed to each other as the frontrunners. Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur welcomed the distraction, as it kept attention away from his squad. On Ferrari's preparations, Leclerc emphasized their progress: "What I'm happy about is that we are going through our programme, we haven't had any reliability issues so far, and this is a good start. Everything stacks up with what we expected, so that's a good base to then start to work on and to improve."
Evaluating competitors, he praised Red Bull's power unit performance from the tests' outset. Mercedes, he said, displayed strong elements but appeared to be concealing more. McLaren remained harder to judge. Overall, Leclerc anticipated Red Bull and Mercedes leading, followed closely by Ferrari. "But it doesn't seem to be too much of a gap for now," he added. These remarks came before teammate Lewis Hamilton encountered a sudden stop in the SF-26 with 10 minutes remaining in the first session.
