The Fiscalía General de la República revealed on July 15, 2026, that Mauro Alberto Núñez Ojeda, known as 'El Jando', lied about his identity when detained in February 2025.
The FGR confirmed that 'El Jando' piloted the flight that transported Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López from Culiacán, Sinaloa, to New Mexico on July 25, 2024. He returned to Mexico and was detained in Culiacán on February 8, 2025, after a clash with the Army and National Guard.
When presented to the FGR, 'El Jando' used a false name and his cousin's passport. Voice and fingerprint evidence in June 2026 allowed verification of his true identity. He was charged with crimes as a high-level member of the Cártel de Sinaloa, though he denied links to organized crime.
In August 2025, Mexico extradited him to the United States along with 25 other high-risk detainees. The FGR stated that investigations continue and that new requests will be made to U.S. authorities.
