Arrowhead Game Studios is set to release a major update for Helldivers 2 on February 10, 2026, introducing the returning cyborg faction and a new battle for Cyberstan. Game director Mikael Eriksson discussed how player actions will shape the game's ongoing narrative. New enemies include agitators, radicals, and the vox engine vehicle.
Helldivers 2, the cooperative extraction shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios, is expanding its galactic war with the Machinery of Oppression update launching on February 10, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. This update brings back the cyborg enemies from the original 2015 Helldivers game, who originated as human dissidents and became progenitors of the automaton faction players have been fighting.
The update coincides with Super Earth's invasion of the cyborg-controlled planet Cyberstan, where players must liberate the world from these foes fueled by "rage and socialism." New cyborg enemies include the Agitators, heavily armored field commanders that order weaker automatons to swarm players; the Radicals, cybernetically enhanced humans armed with shotguns and capable of devastating techno-martial arts kicks; and the Vox Engine, a mobile tank equipped with dual heavy laser cannons, Gatling guns, rockets, and propaganda broadcasts that must be destroyed.
In an interview with IGN, game director Mikael Eriksson explained Arrowhead's narrative approach, drawing parallels to tabletop role-playing games. "Players can win and players can lose, and it's going to be super fun to see that play out," he said, noting past events like the defense of Super Earth that could have gone differently. Player performance will influence the Galactic War, potentially leading to consequential outcomes such as the permanent destruction of planets. "We know that players will now go to Cyberstan, but we don't know how it will play out... Planets can get destroyed to never be able to be played on again. That sort of thing can happen."
Eriksson emphasized the game's accessibility as a "forever game" without heavy FOMO elements, with ongoing work to improve onboarding for new and casual players. "We are actively working on getting to a point where regardless of if you're new or if you're experienced, you should just be able to get into the game and understand very easily exactly what's happening," he added. The team aims to keep the simple fantasy intact while evolving content agily. CEO Shams Jorjani has warned of the cyborgs' tenacity, promising a challenging fight as part of the broader automaton homeworld invasion.
